What is comprehensive sexuality education?
Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is about inspiring youth to develop the skills and confidence they need to be their best selves – in regards to their health, their relationships, and their education. CSE accomplishes this by going beyond abstinence-based education on reproduction, risks, and disease to help students with social and emotional learning. Quality CSE addresses the broad range of sexual health topics, and provides long-term benefits for young people’s physical and mental health, safety, and academic success. Oregon’s human sexuality laws mandate all K-12 schools teach age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education. Oregon’s approach to comprehensive sexuality education equips students with the knowledge and skills to realize their health, well-being, and educational goals.
When comprehensive sexuality education is at its best, it supports:
- Self-esteem and self-advocacy
- Critical thinking skills
- Effective decision making
- Respectful relationships
- Body literacy
- Emotional well-being
- Academic connectedness and well-being
